  • Introduction

    The Role and Objectives of the Department

    With the arrival of the 21st century, many nations have strengthened competitiveness in the service industries of culture and tourism and have moved away from the previous traditional manufacturing industry. The value of life is shifting to a paradigm that emphasizes consumeristic ideas of leisure and culture and so the hotel, tourism and food service industries are receiving more attention.

    In Korea, because of the intense five-day work week, quality academic research and industrial expansion of the hotel, tourism and food service industry is of utmost importance to the hospitality market.  To promptly meet the needs of the times, this department provides structured theories and practical education in the hotel, tourism and food service industry so as to produce innovative leaders in each field.

    Outlook on the relevant market

    • World Tourism Organization (WTO) predicts that the number of the world’s overseas tourists will increase to 1 billion in 2010, and 1.56 billion by 2020.
    • The tourism industry budget is expected to account for 20% of the world’s GDP by 2008, from 12% in 2003.
    • The employment inducement coefficient in the tourism industry is 52.1 people, which is double the average of all industries.
    • The tourism industry exerts stronger influence over added value creation and foreign-exchange earning rates than other industries.
